My Story – The Healing Gift of a Car Accident

The Accident

A snowy night in January of 1973 changed my life forever. Having crashed my VW beetle head-on into an oncoming car, I smashed my head against the windshield. I woke up in a tow truck.

Long before functional MRI’s and sophisticated brain imaging techniques, it was assumed if there were no broken bones or obvious cuts or bleeding, you were okay. I was first plagued by light sensitivity, and then by headaches and trouble with concentration and organizing my thoughts. This went on for two years. Although I didn’t know it at the time, I was suffering from the effects of a mild traumatic brain injury.

There were also personality changes. While I had been a cocky and energetic teenager, I was now less confident, less motivated, and less self-directed. Once controlled, I was more impulsive and overly emotional. I did not recognize myself. In fact, I felt like a shell of my former self.

The Healing Process Begins: A Blessing in Disguise

Prior to the car accident I had led a very sheltered middle class life. At age 22, I was cut off from my feelings and numb. As I said, I was arrogant and cocky. The accident was a wake-up call, and I began doing everything and anything to heal myself, and in so doing, help others.

Once I understood that my injury was the source of the dramatic changes in my life, I decided to go back to school to better understand the dynamic interface between the mind and the body. I did not realize at the time that the process of recovery would not only heal me, but help me function at a higher level than I would have otherwise.

I explored many modalities, taking a path of body-mind transformation that launched my career path as a Chiropractor and healer. These modalities included Chiropractic, yoga, dance therapy, and drawing. I began eating whole foods and studied the martial arts of TaiChi and Qigong. I studied Mindfulness Meditation and completed the Pathwork Transformational Program.

Living Authentically – The Secret Benefits of Healing Modalities

All these modalities transformed me and led to a sense of living the life that i was meant to live. I began to open to a greater awareness of who I was as an authentic human being, more integrated in my thinking and feeling, able to see the possibilities of life even more. I began to see the wholeness of each person. It is this awareness that I bring to my work with people who are seeking healing. I seek to promote your embodiment, the unfolding of your being at all levels–mental, physical, emotional and spiritual.

A Special Encounter and My Personal Experience with the Feldenkrais and CranioSacral Methods

But now I get ahead of myself. Back to 1975. In that year, I was fortunate to encounter Dr. Moshe Feldenkrais, the founder of the Feldenkrais Method. I knew in an instant that I was in the presence of a genius, and I vowed to study with him. After becoming a Chiropractor, I joined the Feldenkrais Professional Training Program in 1980 and learned to experience the sensation of being in a body in a whole new way.

Even though I was coordinated and a good athlete, I had always viewed my body from the outside. Through the Feldenkrais practices, I learned the incredible power of moving with attention. I learned the power of sensing and feeling my whole body participating with every move. I began to move through my days with awareness and aliveness and fluidity. I became inspired to offer the same for my Chriopractic clients.

Gradually I shifted my emphasis from chiropractic correction to using my new tools to help patients get in touch with themselves, both emotionally and sensorily. So that they can feel better and function better.

As studies emerge about the brain’s ability to rewire itself and form new connections within, I am ever more excited about the potential for people who learn from the Feldenkrais Method. Leading brain scientists such as Dr. Michael Mezernich support the Feldenkrais Method’s potential to literally re-wire the brain, so that they can recover lost function.

Studies and encounters in another body-mind approach to healing, CranioSacral Therapy, has taught me that it is possible to remove compressive forces from earlier traumas–even 30 years ago.

CranioSacral Therapy’s methods stimulate the body’s innate intelligence to process and resolve the effects of trauma or stress stored in the body. I have benefitted tremendously from this healing art. Following sessions that I received from others during training, I immediately felt a greater sense of balance, of being right in body and mind, of feeling calm and clear headed. These are the benefits that I’m excited about sharing with you through this work.

The Gift of My “Accident” That I Want to Share With You

So I want to say that I provide a space for you to grow. Whether you’ve been in a car accident or your life is in upheaval and you feel stuck, or whether your pain is physical, emotional, or chronic, I provide a nurturing supportive environment to help you heal. The approaches that I use allow your body to reveal itself, to me and to you, and do what it needs to repair itself and come back into balance. I am here to provide support and a space for your process to unfold, so that you can experience more aliveness, more joy, more love and better health.
