Feldenkrais Method®

Unlike traditional exercises, that emphasize repetition, stretching and willpower, the Feldenkrais Method teaches you how to reduce unnecessary muscular effort by moving more efficiently.

What is the Feldenkrais Method?

The Feldenkrais Method is an educational system that uses movement to teach self-awareness and improve function. 1 Through this Method, you can increase your ease and range of motion, improve your flexibility and coordination, and rediscover your innate capacity for graceful, efficient movement. 2

Developed by Dr. Moshe Feldenkrais, this Method uses gentle movements as a way to improve the communication and connection between your brain and your body. As Dr. Feldenkrais often said: “If you don’t know what you’re doing, you can’t do what you want.”

Through movement, you will become aware of habitual actions that are causing you pain, and how to correct them. This slow, gentle movement re-education gets directly to the root cause of most chronic muscular pain by helping the brain to relax and move the muscles properly.

If one is not able to sense oneself accurately, one is un-aware of how much effort and tension is going into everyday movements. This is the reason for constant pain and strain in different parts of the body, i.e. neck and shoulders.

Feldenkrais is the “language” of sensation, movement and attention that makes the Brain communicate with the body more effectively. ~ Dr. Edward Feldman

Our whole body approach provides therapy and solutions, including the Feldenkrais Method, to relieve all forms of chronic pain, not limited to back and neck pain, but also prevents you from being injured again. This approach provides for fast and permanent pain resolution.

The Feldenkrais Method is found in two forms: Functional Integration® and Awareness Through Movement®.

Functional Integration (FI)

(Private Sessions)

Functional Integration sessions are one-on-one and highly personalized. This is the “hands-on” version of the Feldenkrais Method®. Each session is a unique experience, designed to address your particular needs and concerns. The sessions take place on a padded table, while the client remains clothed. Afterwards, people often report feeling relaxed and refreshed, more comfortable in their body, as well as improved posture and breathing.

Awareness Through Movement (ATM)

(Group Lessons)

Awareness Through Movement classes are a group exercise. They incorporate a plan of verbally directed movement sequences to improve your movement intelligence, leading to pain resolution. The lessons usually last from 30 to 60 minutes, with each organized around a particular body function. This group structured learning process is designed to evoke safe, gradual and effective learning.

Contact Feldman Wellness Center to schedule an appointment for a Feldenkrais consultation, private (FI) session or to learn more about upcoming ATM classes.

How is Feldenkrais different?

  • The Feldenkrais Method focuses on patterns of action, which can help where other practitioners only addressed the local site of injury.
  • Moving slowly wakes the brain up, forming new patterns, getting you unstuck and restoring your vitality.
  • Moving with attention turns your brain on, allowing for new freedom of movement.
  • The aim of this focused movement is to improve awareness of your whole self in action.
  • Each Feldenkrais lesson is individual and custom tailored to fit your particular needs.

What benefits will I receive?

  • Relief from neck and back pain
  • Restored energy and vitality
  • Improved posture and breathing issues
  • Release of tension and stress
  • Greater coordination and movement

Why should I work with Dr. Feldman?

“I teach you how to move more easily through directed attention, gentle movements and light touch to enhance your self awareness. Thus allowing your body to fully express itself, and be used to it’s fullest potential.

When you are injured or in pain, the way you use yourself becomes constrained. You lose choice in order to prevent certain feelings and pain from emerging. I follow what you’re doing so that you can let go of unnecessary muscular effort and pattern holding; leading to better use of your skeleton and overall reduction of body tension. Movement becomes increasingly generalized throughout your body and more interconnected. You sense a greater ease within yourself and more movement possibilities.”

Dr. Ed is a genius and a miracle-worker. His diagnostic approach and his methods are unsurpassable. Now that I have had a single treatment for my shoulder tendonitis by Dr. Ed, I know I won’t need any cortisone injections or anti-inflammatory medication. But I will go back for a few more Feldenkreis treatments and classes. Dr. Ed is the best.
